Spotlight Series: Martha Butler

By Ben Goodman

What inspired you to

start Loving Earth?

The desire to have a successful business that would give back to nature and to human bodies. It stemmed from the belief that food is sacred and great care should be taken with how it’s grown, made and eaten.

We’ve always been aware that we are all one connected body – humanity, environment, wildlife. We wanted to show that a company could exist, and be successful, in a connected way. We didn’t want to treat things like a commodity, solely as a disposable unit with a dollar value. It’s important that each part takes care of each other.

What is Loving Earth's brand ethos?

Be an uplifting presence in the world. Be an example of a regenerative business – a business that gives back. It’s not just about sustainability any more, it’s about restoring and regenerating the planet and our society, We’re working with regenerative cacao from the Kemito Ene cooperative in the Amazon and we’re very committed to helping the regenerative movement spread and grow https://lovingearth.net/blog/blog/2019/04/10/regenerative-chocolate/

That also means cutting down on plastic and encouraging people to do the same. For a good while now we’ve been investing in compostable film and we’re always looking for new ways to do better.

And of course we’re committed to being a plant based company all the way. Plant based wholefood, unrefined sugar, no fillers and alway minimal ingredients. These themes are becoming more and more urgent for the planet and our future.

What is the best thing about working for a brand which puts the environment first?

You feel proud to say who you work for, proud of the company and what it’s doing. It’s gratifying to realise that the ethics we started the company on are even more vital now...clean ingredients, plant-based wholefood, ethical sourcing and climate positive food.

It's a wonderful feeling when you immediately connected with other people who care about the same issues and are working hard to make things better...it’s like a big beautiful fam.

What does a typical day at Loving Earth HQ look like for you?

Well right now it’s my home office, looking out at the trees while my kids are playing monopoly/getting bored/cooking cakes/drawing stuff/zooming friends.

But basically it means working with a bunch of talented committed people, trying to get the best out of each situation for everyone. At the moment we’re jamming new Easter and Xmas product ideas and we’re about to launch a brand new bar!!! Stay tuned..

What do you absolutely love about the brand you’ve built up?

I love that it’s not just a narrow commercial focus. We think of ourselves as a 360° brand. That means all of the different pieces are our responsibility – from sourcing to flavour, to price, to beauty, to impact, to community.... I think that’s what the world needs from businesses now..it’s time we expected more from brands.

What’s your go-to treat to whip up in the kitchen, using Loving Earth products?

Meera Shodha’s banana bread with big old chunks of LE hazelnut choc YOM https://m.lovingearth.net/blog/blog/2014/12/24/yogic-banana-bread/

What book can you not put down at the moment?

I tend to inhale books at a rapid rate. I’ve been reading Nordic Noir and Crime novels lately (balancing out the sweet with the dark, I guess). I’ve just loved Two Girls Down by Louisa Luna. I adore a kick arse anti-social heroine!

What’s your Loving Earth pick to make someone smile this Easter?

Has to be the Boobook eggs with that sweet lil Boobook owl on the box. And you know what else is sweet? No plastic, that’s sweet. Also supporting out local forests....super sweet.

How do you have your coffee?

S.T.R.O.N.G. flat white with almond milk. (did I mention strong?)
